Director of Underworld : Bloodwars talks about her leading lady Kate Beckinsale

The mystical world of the lycans and vampires is all set to dawn upon Indian audiences this December with the release part 5 of the popular Underworld franchise – Underworld : Bloodwars 3D. One name that is synonymous with this franchise is none other than leading lady Kate Beckinsale. Director Anna Foerster is all praise for Kate as she talks about her experience working with Kate and what she brought to the character through her performance.
 
Says Foerster, “I have to say I think Kate is probably one of the most intelligent and one of the most brilliant women I’ve worked with. What was really amazing was to figure out, to evolve, to explore the new facets of Selene in that new story because she’s clearly evolving. She has had this incredible hardship of losing everything she loves. And has to come back, and is more fierce and more kick ass, more aggressive than she has ever been before. But at the same time you have facets that are new to Selene, or maybe we haven’t seen that much in Selene.  She’s softer, there’s a vulnerability about it.”

Women power has been becoming a major talking point and has been ruling the content roost in cinema and television. And women are not just stopping at playing strong characters but are also seriously kickin some serious butt. Hollywood has been a front runner in celebrating the action “heroines” right from The Bride (Kill Bill) to Lara Croft to Charlie’s Angel’s to ofcourse Catwoman. Indian actresses too have also contributed knockout punches to the international action arena with Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone’s jaw dropping action and stunt-baazi in Quantico and XXX respectively.

With the success of female led action based franchises like Van Helsing, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and the soon to release part 5 of the Underworld series, there seems to be a clear market for seeing these sexy and strong women challenge their enemy, in a truly complete sense, for their rightful place and cause. Makers and the actors pay tremendous attention to every aspect of building the character including serious stunt and action training as a run up to the film so that the actresses can perform their roles with complete authenticity.
