In a significant legal turn of events, the Jaipur Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has issued notices to Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff for participating in a problematic pan masala ad. The complaint had sought that the ad be declared misleading and deceptive, with the potential to be misleading consumers into buying an unsafe product on false premises.
Jaipur-based lawyer Yogendra Singh Badiyal initiated the case claiming to be disturbed by the usage of the advertising tagline in the ad – “Daane Daane Mein Kesar Ka Dum” or literally “Every grain has the might of saffron.” This, in his opinion, was a misleading claim since true saffron was a very pricey ingredient and must be in every way, financially and spatially, incongruous for its inclusion into an ₹5 priced pan masala product. The complaint further highlights that such marketing tactics mislead consumers and promote a product known to be harmful to health.
Not only the actors, but Vimal Kumar Agarwal, the JB Industries boss, has also been served a legal notice. The court has ordered all parties accused to present themselves for hearing on March 19. It has also indicated that in case they do not present themselves, the case will go on in their absence. Additionally, the commission has directed the actors as well as the company to file their replies within 30 days.
So far, no statement has been made by any of the Bollywood actors on the legal notice. But the petitioner is seeking stringent action against deceptive advertisement, requesting the court to ban the ad and prosecute the perpetrators.
With increasing consciousness in the world regarding the role of celebrities in promoting dangerous products, this case has again fueled debates regarding responsible endorsements. The industry, lawyers, and fans alike are now eagerly awaiting to know how these Bollywood stars will react to the charges.
