Tollywood’s innovative director Prasanth Varma has established himself with his experimental storytelling and genre-defying films. Ever since his start with the psychological thriller Awe, he never held back taking risks creatively. With movies such as Kalki and Zombie Reddy, Prasanth demonstrated that he could seamlessly juxtapose experimental concepts with box-office potential.
Though Awe exhibited his creative talents, it was Zombie Reddy — a humorous fusion of zombie fare and Rayalaseema landscape — that ushered him to mainstream stardom. Zombie Reddy, a low-key film that featured a great premise, surprised the box office fraternity by attracting decent appreciation from audiences and critics alike and served as a milestone for Prasanth’s career.
Now that HanuMan has achieved its gigantic pan-India success, the fans were waiting with bated breath for any news of a potential Zombie Reddy sequel. While Prasanth Varma has confirmed interest, his plate is too full with quite a few ambitious projects, which means he would not be personally helming a sequel anytime in the near future.
In an interesting move, Prasanth is now focusing on mentoring other directors by sharing his stories and overseeing projects creatively. He previously did this with Devaki Nandana Vasudeva, a film based on his concept. Despite the film not performing as expected, it set a precedent for this collaborative approach.
Going by industry rumors, Zombie Reddy 2 is currently in pre-production, and it will pursue a similar path. The sequel will be helmed by Suparn Verma, who found fame working on the Netflix series Rana Naidu. Prasanth Varma will also be creatively involved, making sure his style and world-building stay intact.
Teja Sajja, the lead actor in Zombie Reddy and the recent nationwide success HanuMan, will be reprising his role in the sequel. While it is not typical for sequels to change directors, this pairing may introduce a fresh new dynamic to the franchise.
With Prasanth’s imaginative idea, Suparn’s realistic direction, and Teja’s star power on the ascendant, Zombie Reddy 2 is looking like one film to watch out for.
Meanwhile, Teja Sajja is currently working on his upcoming film Mirai, keeping the post-HanuMan momentum going strong. Whether Zombie Reddy 2 can match or surpass the cult following of the original remains to be seen — but it certainly promises to be one of the most anticipated sequels in Telugu cinema.
